Easter Week Program in Sitges 2024
Sunday, March 24: Palm Sunday
Palm Sunday is officially the day on which Holy Week begins. A perfect day for young and old to get up early to enjoy the good weather and a day that has as protagonists the palms and branches, which will be blessed in different parts of the town. The blessing begins at 10:30 am in the Church of Sant Joan, followed by a procession and a mass. You can also attend the blessing at 11:30 am in Escola Pia or at 12 am in the Plaça de l'Ajuntament.
Thursday, March 28: Maundy Thursday
Maundy Thursday is also one of the most important days, since the Pasos de Semana Santa (Holy Week floats) are celebrated. These are artistic representations that are usually mounted on floats or platforms that are carried in procession through the streets during the Holy Week celebrations. On this Holy Thursday you can attend the Passage of the Flagellation, the Passage of the Piarists and the Passage of the Virgin of Sorrows, which will be held at the Chapel of Sant Sebastià from 10 am to 2 pm and from 5:30 pm until midnight. You can also attend the Paso de Marineros from 11 am to 14 pm and from 17:30 pm to 21 pm at Calle Carreta 26, and the Brotherhood of the Holy Sepulchre will expose the image of the Holy Sepulchre in the Palau del Rei Moro, from 10 am to 14 pm and from 17 pm to 21:30 pm.
Friday, March 29: Good Friday
On Good Friday early in the morning (8 am), the Via Crucis will take place, from the Hospital de Sant Joan Baptista to the church of Sant Joan in Poble Sec. The churches will have special masses throughout the day, and will be followed by the Exhibition of Easter Steps and the Procession of Silence at 10 pm, which will begin in Baluard.
Saturday, March 30: Holy Saturday - Saturday of Glory
During Holy Saturday there will be the Celebration of Easter Eve in the Parish Church at 22:30 pm, and after this act will take place the Caramelles, with the groups Caramelles del Prado, Caramelles del Retiro and Caramelles Sitgetanes. On Sunday, there will be Easter masses in the usual hours of this day (from 11 am to 12 pm). However, this weekend can also serve us to stroll through the streets of the town and enjoy the quiet atmosphere and sunny weather that characterizes this time of year in Sitges.
Monday, April 1: Easter Monday
A mass with singing of the goigs (praises) and caramelles will be held at 11 am at the Sanctuary of the Mare de Déu del Vinyet. In addition, around 4:30 pm there will be a performance by the three groups of caramelles mentioned above, in different parts of Sitges.
In Catalonia, Easter Monday is a very popular day of celebration. During this day, families gather to enjoy the Easter mona, a traditional cake that is usually decorated with chocolate figures. It is a tradition that the godfather or godmother is the one who gives the mona to the children.
Remember that in these special times it is best to book your apartment in advance and enjoy these days with peace of mind. Book now and live the best Easter in Sitges!
