At this point, it is clear that one of the main attractions of Sitges is the sea and its beautiful beaches, which attract thousands of tourists every year and have been certified as beaches of excellent quality by the European Union. Sitges has 18 kilometers of beaches for all tastes: from the central and family-friendly Platja de la Fragata to the nudist and more secluded Platja dels Balmains. Less than a quarter of an hour from the center, we also find Platja d'Aiguadolç, a family cove in one of the most spectacular settings in Sitges. Not forgetting Platja de Terramar and Platja de la Rodona.
If you want more detailed information, we invite you to visit the selection of our favorite beaches in Sitges.
Although the most characteristic of Sitges are its beaches, Sitges is a town with a lot of history. A history that begins 55000 years ago, in prehistoric times. Sitges has been home to Iberian settlements and a Roman Port.
Sitges, whose name comes from "sitja" (in Catalan, an underground deposit to store grain), was constructured around the Castle of Sitges. Previously we told you the history of Sitges, but today we want to talk about the place to see in Sitges in summer and during the rest of the year.
Church of St. Bartomeu and St. Tecla
One of the symbols in Sitges. Baroque style and built in the XVII century, the most spectacular of this church is in the interior: its Renaissance altarpiece of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla, from 1499 and made by the artist Nicolás de Redença.
Mermaid of Sitges
In front of St Bartomeu's Church, in Passeig de la Ribera, we found the famous Mermaid, made by the artist Pere Jou. The famous Mermaid has become one of the symbols of the city and one of the most visited sites.
Maricel Palace
Another of the emblematic buildings ins Sitges. Built in 1910 by order of the millionaire Charles Deering, the palace was built in front of a set of fishermen's houses that surround Fonollar Street and the hospital of San JuanWe will talk about them later.
You can visit Maricel Palace each Sunday: at 11h (in English), at 12h (in catalan) and at 13h (Spanish)
White Fishermen's Houses in Sitges
Without leaving the old town, but by the sea, the visit to the fishing districts of Sitges is also an essential visit. Formerly, fishermen's houses were distinguished by the white color of their facades. In contrast, none of the modernist buildings of the old town is painted white, but they were decorated with other tones to distinguish themselves socially.
The Romantic Museum Can Llopis
The museum is located in a house built in 1793 and belonged to the Llopis family until the death of his last heir, becoming the property of the Generalitat de Catalunya. This museum shows what life was like for the upper class during the Romantic period in Sitges. Currently, however, it is closed for renovations, but its reopening is planned soon. Check its website for more information.
