Spending the Easter holiday in Sitges is a great opportunity to discover this idyllic spot for several reasons: its great location, just minutes from Barcelona, top-quality beaches and warm temperatures with great weather at Easter in Sitges. All of these conditions make the city very popular this time of year, as visitors can enjoy their first dip and first outdoor meals, which absolutely must include tapas and typical Mediterranean dishes.
The dates for Easter 2017 in Sitges are from 9 to 17 April. Finding accommodations in Sitges this week without booking ahead can be quite difficult, although there are sometimes apartments in Sitges for Easter available at the last moment.
The town adds some splashes of religious colour to its typical white and blue for events to celebrate this holiday. Below is a list of Easter activities in Sitges:
For Palm Sunday, children and adults alike come out to Sant Joan church and the Town Hall square to shake their palms and have them blessed. Christian tradition dictates godfathers give their godchildren a palm frond.
From Wednesday 12 through Friday 14, there will be a display of dioramas at Palau del Rei Moro organised by Grup Pessebrista de Sitges. The dioramas represent the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus. On Maundy Thursday, churches have special afternoon masses and there will be an exhibition of Easter “pasos” (floats for religious processions) in Sitges at the parochial church, the Fisherman's Guild and Palau del Rei Moro, organised by Agrupació de Balls Populars de Sitges.
The main Easter procession in Sitges is held on Good Friday. It starts at 10 pm from Plaça Baluard and goes round the main streets of Sitges: Mirador Miquel Utrillo, Fonollar, Baluard Vidal i Quadras, Port de n'Alegre, Rafel Llopart, Sant Damià, Santiago Rusiñol, Jesús, Sant Bartomeu, Sant Gaudenci, Sant Francesc, Cap de la Vila and Major, before returning to Plaça del Ajuntament and Plaça Baluard.
On Saturday and Sunday, most of the special events are associated with mass and “caramelles” (popular Easter songs). However, it is also a perfect weekend to wander round the streets of Sitges and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
In Catalonia, Easter Monday is also a holiday, known as Día de la Mona. Families get together and enjoy the Easter “mona”, normally a cake or chocolate figurine. So, if you’re still on holiday, we encourage you to prepare a nice meal in your apartment and order this sweet dessert well in advance.
